In August and September 2017, Hurricane Harvey caused devastating flooding across areas of Texas. Although her home was spared, Lee Ann Lively of League City, Texas, saw the destruction many others in her area were dealing with including those in the nearby Bay Ridge neighborhood. Wanting to help, Lee Ann made it her mission to provide quilts to as many of those impacted by the flooding as possible. She put a call out to the quilting community and quilters from across America answered.
The Trinity Valley Quilters’ Guild in Fort Worth gathered more than 200 quilts, pillow cases and blankets. Members of the Southern Belle group donated their quilting services. Lee Ann herself completed 63 quilts on her Statler between September and December of that year while also continuing her normal quilting business.
Her local friends and neighbors pitched in with the binding and quilting as well. Once they were complete, the local elementary school and Helping Hands Club assisted with the delivery of quilts to the families impacted by Hurricane Harvey in the Bay Ridge neighborhood.
Says Mellissa Green, who nominated Lee Ann: “She is a Statler Warrior – on the front line every day to help. [She is] a great example of how to use your talents to help those around you, near and far.”
